What The Waterfall Hunter Does
For the last decade Chris Shaffer has wandered the coastal mountains,
national parks, forests and rolling hillsides of California in search of waterfalls. The
award winning author has written dozens of articles for national, regional and local
publications about waterfalls and also published The Definitive Guide to the
Waterfalls of Southern and Central California, voted Book of the Year in 2005 by
the Outdoor Writers Association of California. Shaffer was featured in a
centerpiece article in the Los Angeles Times in 2005 where he was dubbed The
Waterfall Hunter. In the spring of ‘05 Shaffer starred in an ABC World News and
ABC Morning News feature about finding remote waterfalls in Southern California.

As The Waterfall Hunter, Shaffer spends his time scanning maps, topo
programs and landscapes looking for possible waterfalls and then chasing them on
foot. At times, it may take Shaffer days, weeks or even months to find a waterfall,
however, it’s the challenge that keeps him driven to document and reveal every
waterfall in California. Shaffer pounces through rivers, rows across lakes, fights his
way through overgrown brush and trees when necessary to locate waterfalls. To
date, Shaffer has named more than 100 waterfalls in California. His short term goal
is to visit 500 waterfalls in California.
